Palmya is a semi-mythical Caribbean island, a tropical paradise with a difference. It is a libertarian society with few rules or restraints, except one. To honour the natural beauty of the female body, women are forbidden to wear clothes.

Palmyra today is one of the least sexist societies in the world. The Governor and the Chief Minister are women, as are a majority of the seventeen Members of Parliament; and females control large sectors of the economy. In fact, although it seems paradoxical, this has been attributed to the nude law. For the men of Palmyra are not stupid. They recognize that continuation of the nude law depends on the cooperation and consent of the women subjected to it. On the other side, opposition to repeal in the 1970s was led by women who understood the roots of their empowerment. For centuries the law was imposed on females to serve the pleasure of men. Today it is the women who revel in their nudity. It is a form of liberation of the self, a source of potency and even power over the male, that is enhanced and not reduced by compulsion.
